Design Vision
Water Street runs the length of downtown Mobile’s waterfront, connecting the Convention Center, cruise terminal, Amtrak station, Cooper Riverside Park, major hotels, museums, and key employment centers. This project would reimagine the corridor as a balanced, multimodal complete street: one that strengthens the connection between downtown and the water’s edge while protecting the public and private investments that line it.
The redesign would:
- Convert four travel lanes to two
- Add a 10-foot protected bicycle path
- Add new sidewalks and a scenic 10-foot pedestrian walkway through expanded green space and pocket parks
- Improve intersection safety with stacked crosswalks and simplified turning movements
- Add on-street parking to improve access for adjacent businesses and visitors
- Shift the roadway alignment to reduce impervious surface, support upgraded stormwater systems, and allow floodable park strategies that address the corridor’s drainage problems
