Trail and park safety begins with thoughtful engineering and design. The City of Mobile is implementing a comprehensive safety plan across all new greenways and transformative park projects — including Three Mile Creek Greenway Trail, Brookley by the Bay, and Perch Creek Preserve. The following design elements and security features reflect built conditions on the recently completed sections of the Three Mile Creek Greenway Trail and will be carried forward across all projects.
Lighting Anti-vandalism fixtures are installed at parking areas, trailheads, and key points along the trail.
Cameras High-resolution, night-vision security cameras with 24-hour motion detection are installed throughout the trail system. Cameras record continuously for 30 days and feed directly into MPD Project Shield, allowing police officers to monitor the trail instantaneously or review footage immediately following any incident.
WiFi WiFi is enabled throughout the trail system, ensuring users can make emergency calls and access the City’s online 311 reporting system even in areas with limited cell coverage.
Landscaping & Sight Lines Trail edges are mown a minimum of 5 feet and trees are limbed up 7–10 feet to maintain clear sight lines throughout. Dense shrub plantings are avoided and landscaping is maintained on a regular schedule to prevent overgrowth from obscuring visibility.
Hours of Operation Greenway trails follow City park hours and are closed from 10:00 PM until dawn. Lighting at parking areas and trailheads is automatic.
What the Research Shows
Studies from communities across the country — and early experience on Mobile’s own University Hospital Connector — consistently show that well-designed, actively monitored greenways reduce crime in surrounding neighborhoods rather than attract it. Research in Mecklenburg County, NC found that greenway-adjacent properties had lower crime rates than surrounding neighborhoods 75% of the time, with similar findings documented in Denver, Seattle, and Tampa.
The Mobile Police Department patrols all greenway trails and transformative park projects on a schedule based on usage patterns and activity analysis. A network of high-resolution cameras with night vision records continuously for 30 days and feeds directly into MPD Project Shield for real-time monitoring and rapid incident response. Knox Box gate access allows fire and emergency vehicles to reach any point on the trail quickly.
