Mobile, Ala. — Construction will begin this week along Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue as the City of Mobile makes major investments into this historic downtown corridor.
Work is starting this week near Butchers Lane just past Three Mile Creek and will move east toward Broad Street. There will be single-lane closures as work progresses, but the road will remain open to traffic throughout the project. The project is expected to wrap up in the summer of 2027.
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue “Complete Streets” Project represents an $11.2 million investment and will include a full reconstruction of the roadway. It will also add new curbs, gutters, underground utilities, stormwater assets, sidewalks and drainage features. With the addition of onstreet bike lanes, the project will also tie into the city’s Three Mile Creek Greenway Trail.
The improvements along the 1.3-mile section of MLK Avenue will also complement District 1 County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood’s ongoing efforts to establish a Civil Rights and Cultural Heritage District that will preserve and celebrate historic places along “The Avenue.”
This project was paid for, in part, with federal funding from the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council (RESTORE Council) under the Resources and Ecosystems Sustainability, Tourist Opportunities, and Revived Economies of the Gulf Coast States Act of 2012 (RESTORE Act).
Additional funding and support are being provided by the Alabama Department of Transportation, the Mobile Metropolitan Planning Organization, the Mobile Area Water and Sewer System (MAWSS), and the City of Mobile. More information is available at mapformobile.org/broad-street/.
