On September 1, the Mobile City Council authorized a pursuit of $7.495 million in federal funding through the National Park Service’s Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership (ORLP) program. This matching grant will fund Phase II of Brookley by the Bay. ORLP requires a dollar-for-dollar local match, so this push creates a $15 million investment package dedicated to expanding public access to Mobile Bay. Brookley by the Bay is moving forward with $9 million in state funding for the Southern Activation Zone, Phase 1b. Governor Kay Ivey announced the award on Thursday, August 20, as part of more than $52 million in GoMESA funding for 21 coastal Alabama projects. The Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GoMESA) shares revenue from federal offshore oil and gas leases with Gulf Coast states. The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources administers the state's share, with approval from the Governor's Office.
